Do First, What Matters Most

One of the axioms I preach, teach, and try to live by is “DO FIRST, WHAT MATTERS MOST.” What does that mean? It simply means to do the most important things first.

And when I study scripture I see that God lays out fairly clearly for His followers what their priorities should be and thus what should get our attention first.

Here’s the list of priorities in the Christians life:

  1. God

  2. Spouse (if you’re married)

  3. Children (if you have them)

  4. Occupation

  5. Ministry

But there’s a problem. Many of us would agree that God should be first, but our schedule comes nowhere close to reflecting that reality.

We wake up after hitting the snooze button a few too many times. We rush to get the kids ready. Try and stuff something in our face and all the while attempting to look presentable for a Zoom call. Then we race to the post office. Drop off kids at practice. Have another phone meeting during said practice. Pick them up. Make dinner. Clean the house. Tuck in kids. Watch something on Netflix. And then crawl up to our bed exhausted only to scroll mindlessly through social media. And all the while we never took a moment to connect with our creator.

Our failure isn’t that we haven’t prioritized our schedule. It’s that we haven’t scheduled our priorities.

Now I don’t want to be legalistic and say you need to start your day with God, but I do think it makes a lot of sense.

In fact, in Mark chapter 1 we see that Jesus had a practice of starting his day with His Father...

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

It’s almost as if Jesus couldn’t wait to talk to the Father. For him, it wasn’t a HAVE to but a GET to. And I think he realized that his connection time in the morning would have a direct impact on the rest of his day.

For that reason, and a million more, we have created the ONE&ALL DAILY PODCAST. This is a bite sized podcast designed to encourage, inspire, and start your day with God so that the day doesn’t happen to you, but rather, YOU happen to your day. Here's my challenge to you. Take a few minutes now, subscribe to the Daily ONE&ALL Podcast ( Then each day start with this short 2-3 minute devotion to help you focus on what matters most.
